mike inouye is taking a look at the roads for us. meteorologist christina loren has a look at your forecast of course but we begin with bob redell, who is live at the bay bridge. we just saw a look at that live shot. yeah, plenty of fog there, bob. >> reporter: yeah, and it's very dense. there is dense fog in the north bay, san francisco, the upper peninsula and oakland. you can see live behind me this is the scene at the bay bridge toll plaza where we're certainly already seeing that early monday morning backup and perhaps, perhaps part of the reason why it's backing up so much is because of the dense fog. the national weather service has issued dense fog advisories for five of the bay area bridges, including the bay bridge. live look at the golden gate bridge cam, you can't even see the two towers of the golden gate bridge. there is a lot of dense fog there. the headlights heading southbound from marin into san francisco. you've also got advisories on the richmond-san rafael, benicia-martinez and the san

mateo. all of those under advisories. according to our team of meteorologists, this could take some time to burn off because there's not much wind and the late autumn sun is at such a low angle it's not producing much heat so the fog could be lingering through much if not all of the morning commute. if your commute does involve an airplane, i talked with people at sfo and oakland international. too early to tell whether there will be any flight delays. there were delays yesterday at sfo. will that happen again today? they won't get a better north dakota until 6:30, 7:00 when the faa decides whether or not to issue an advisory. if you're going to be out there on the road, make sure you use the low beams. the high beams does create blindness. make sure your brake lights are working and with that being said, slow down and don't tailgate. reporting live here, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> now we want to check the forecast with christina loren. >> oh, it's going to take a while for the fog to lift. this is foster city, a live

picture of the san mateo bridge. you can see people are driving quickly through the fog, give yourself plenty of extra time and don't drive any faster than you can see ahead of you. you have pretty good visibility in compare sub to parts of the bay area where there is no visibility. you've got 200 feet in parts of the bay area. this is san jose where it's completely clear for now. but what i'm noticing is you're also dropping off from 10 to 8 miles over the past ten minutes and we'll drop off throughout the morning hours. right now the fog is the thickest right at the mouth of the delta in fairfield. also napa, santa rosa, up and down the peninsula, you'll encounter deep pockets of fog, especially once you get past 92. that's where it starts to thicken up in particular so take it easy and get ready to tap the brakes. it's the entire central valley that is socked in with fog. by 8:00 a.m. still dealing with a fair amount of cloud cover but

overall looking good by 1:00 p.m. the warmest day of the week. the rain arrives, lots of rain on the way towards the bay area as we head throughout the second half of the week. first let's see how that fog is impacting your drive. it is impacting your drive this morning. good morning, mike. >> it's impacting my report as well because this is the san mateo bridge. i wanted to show it to you. i can't. i can show you a few cars disappearing into the fog on the san mateo as christina has mentioned. we're below a tenth of a mile visibility through many spots. this is the hayward side across 92 and very tough to see, only a few hundred feet there in spots. we'll look at the map and see the approach. you're going to need the windshield wipers across many of the spans because of the fog is thick enough to basically be a drizzle. and where you see the orange highlighted across the maze and the east shore freeway. we often see fog through the tri-valley but livermore moving smoothly. 580 and 680 at the dublin

interchange. a slower drive coming out of the altamont. if you're heading east, that's where you'll get very thick fog for i-5 as well as 580. fairfield and vacaville, as christina said. live look at the peninsula side new york city escape there. this is just south of university where i can still make out the cars on the roadway, but north of here heading up toward menlo park and north of 92 on basically both sides of the bay, we do have very thick fog, so use caution and lower the speeds. allow extra time, folks. back to you. >> good advice, especially on the heels of this story, mike. a deadly weekend on california roadways claimed 27 lives, including six from the bay area. one of those deadly crashes happened saturday night on highway 50 near placerville when the driver of a prius swerved into the path of a minivan. three members of a bay area family in the prius died. a 4-year-old girl from placerville in the minivan was killed. five others were hurt in that crash with minor to serious injuries. investigators are looking into the cause of that crash. >> there is no information

leading to any impairment of that driver. >> witnesses say a deer might have run out into -- in front of the cars. they're often seen in that area and drivers are forced to swerve around them. new video this morning of an early morning crash on 880 that sent at least one person to the hospital. several ambulances and fire trucks responded to the scene of the crash, which it appears involved a few cars. this happened in san jose. traffic was tied up southbound behind the crash at brokaw avenue all the way to montague expressway in san jose. so far the chp is not commenting on what caused this crash. and new this morning, east palo alto police are searching for an armed suspect. go ahead, laura. >> they're looking for an armed suspect who shot a man sitting inside a car. shot spotter pinpointed the gun fire near a home on addison avenue just off of highway 101.

the 49-year-old victim was shot multiple times around 8:00 last night. police have not updated his condition. investigators believe one or more suspects who were on foot walked up to the victim and attacked him. a 15-year-old man linked to a series of crimes in the south bay is expected in court this week. police finally caught him in concord on friday after a week on the run. police say the teen killed a man on november 16th during a carjacking and then tried to kill a san jose police officer. they're not releasing his name because he is a minor. his alleged accomplice is 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks. wilbanks is being held without bail and is due back in court on december 5th. that violent crime spree among the latest serious crimes to strike san jose, a city already struggling with a homicide rate that is well above last year's total. this as the department's chief retires after just two years on the job. dami damien tan trujillo is live in jose this morning where today

the department will ask the public for help in the search for a successor. >> reporter: good morning. the search for chris moore's replacement is already under way and tonight will be a chance for the folks here at the berryessa community center to chime in on what they want to see in their new police chief. chris moore did actually a good job in repairing relations between his office, his department and the community. he established the chief's first community advisory board, which is made up in part by some of the department's critics, but he did not improve his office's reputation with the rank and file. moore escaped a vote of no confidence which the police union decided not to bring up to the full membership. officers say they have a leadership void and want a chief who will stand up to city hall. now, two names that have surfaced as possible candidates are jerry dyer, the chief in the city of fresno. he retired last year, only to be lured back to the job by city leaders. another is the sacramento chief,

rick braziel. he retires at the end of this year and also had to lay off 150 officers. now, in a recent debate on nbc bay area, both the police union and the mayor admit it will be hard to find a replacement, given all the turmoil here in san jose. >> coming in, you're going to have a very difficult battle on trying to get this thing steered straight. >> that's a tough sell to bring in a qualified police chief to lead this major me drop accomplice, mayor. what's going to be your sales pitch. >> it's always tough to find a new police chief. >> reporter: tonight's meeting at the berryessa community center will last an hour and a half. that followed by a meeting wednesday night at the camden community center and it ends on december 10th at the southside community center. this still remains a coveted job, believe it or not. this is still a very good department, very well trained police force, so you can see why many people might be interested in coming to san jose.

we're live at the berryessa community center, i'm damian trujillo. investigators are trying to find the source of a carbon monoxide leak that sickened 11 family members in san francisco. the family called 911 about 7:00 after a carbon monoxide detector went off inside their home on cortland avenue in bernal heights. utility crews could not find the source of the carbon monoxide in the home but medics determined 11 people, including three toddlers, had high levels of carbon monoxide in their blood. fire officials say the carbon monoxide detector likely saved their lives. >> carbon monoxide detectors are very important because it's odorless. you can't smell it. and you won't know it until you start getting signs like a headache or something like that when you're exposed to it. so it's very important to have one in your house. >> starting last year, state law requires any home with an attached garage to have a co detector. multi-unit buildings have until

you want to give yourself plenty of extra time to reach your destination safely and we want to report now sfo says one hour and 15 minute flight delays due to the fog. back to you. happening now, a look at tahrir square where it is starting to look like revolution all over again. as political protests break out in egypt. our cameras caught protesters in the square this morning carrying what appears to be a coffin through the crowd. protesters also camped out in tents. they're refusing to leave until the president backs down or resigns. this morning demonstrations have grown. and today is day five of the growing unrest in egypt. two are dead, more than 500 injured, including at least 160 policemen. protesters are clashing with riot police who in this video are seen beating and dragging away several people. the turmoil began last week when president morsi declared

sweeping powers for himself, claiming that would speed up egypt's crawl toward a new constitution and democracy. among the dead, a teenager protester killed when a riot broke out at the headquarters of egypt's muslim brotherhood. the 15-year-old protester died during clashes with demonstrators and police. president morsi is a former leader of the islamist muslim brotherhood. here's a quick check of the day's top stories. a california couple is dead and their 16-year-old son missing after they tried to rescue their dog from heavy surf on the northern california coast. officials say the dog made it safely to shore but the family drown in eight-foot waves on the beach north of eureka. a couple surviving after a plane crash this weekend. the husband was flying the plane from novato to john wayne airport in orange county when the plane lost power and crashed near cal state north ridge

campus. the couple suffered only minor injuries. the u.s. supreme court is expected to make a decision this week on whether to hear a case challenging the defense of marriage act, which prohibits the government from recognizing same-sex marriages. a married lesbian couple from san francisco is suing because they cannot share benefits on an employer-sponsored health care plan. 6:15. wall street back to work after a short thanksgiving week. >> scott mcgrew, investors watching all that shopping. >> retail sales will be a big factor. we'll get some consumer confidence numbers today as well. investors had a half day of work on friday and pushed the markets higher in an unexpected rally that makes you wish they had the whole day. all the yushl concerns today, fiscal cliff, europe, weighing on the markets. meanwhile there's wall street right there. they're back to work. they're closed on thursday and friday. let's talk about some of the other things going on in the news in business this week, such

as this microsoft store. some analysts stood outside a microsoft store in the mall and counted how many people went into the apple store across the way, how many people went into the microsoft store and figured out that apple sells in each store 11 ipads every hour. how many does microsoft sell of their new surface? categorically zero were sold. these are nearly live pictures out of the phoenix area amazon warehouse there. amazon.com. that company in full cyber swing today. some numbers show the number of kindles amazon is selling may be triple last year's. the new kindle fire, that's the fancy colored version of the kindle which can show movies, now $129. we're going to talk a lot more about cyber monday and deals coming up in just a bit. >> $129, that's not too bad. >> not at all.

keep up with that demand. here is christinchristina. the whole bay area is fogged in. >> we're used to the fog but not this kind of fog. this is the kind of fog they experience in the central valley quite often, tule fog, extremely fog. we're used to that marine layer fog. this morning at the surface you'll have to drive through pockets where you can only see for 10 to maybe 15 feet from time to time, so keep that in mind, especially if you're waking up along the peninsula or headed from the south bay up the peninsula. 6:17 now. this is a live look at foster city, very foggy here. let's show you the contrast in san jose this morning, just beautiful conditions here as the sun makes its way over the horizon. we're about 20 minutes away from our official sunrise, just spectacular here. but we too will be mostly cloudy. it's a matter of time now. 7:00 to 9:00 is when we're expecting the thickest fog, but it's already very thick in san mateo, san francisco, even novato where you just have hundreds of feet in parts, less

than that in other parts of the peninsula so take it easy out there. the thing about fog is it can form just like that so you might walk out your front door in san jose and it looks completely clear. once you get up to 92, that's where you start to really drop off in visibility. this morning we'll continue to see that pattern until i'd say 8:00 to 10:30. the fog will burn off just about everywhere. tomorrow morning another round of fog, not quite as thick, but probably enough to force another round of flight delays. i did point this out about 5, 10 minutes ago, we do have hour and 15 minute delays out of sfo so keep that in mind. by wednesday look at what heads your way. two potent storm systems to get through before the workweek is done and another one comes through over the course of the weekend. but this is the one that's going to be packing the most moisture, the first of the three storms. it moves in between 6:00 a.m. wednesday and is out of here by 4:00 p.m. starting to turn light and

spotty but still getting rain. more on its heels thursday into friday and another system comes through as we head through saturday and sunday. so the moral of the story is if you've got dry conditions but need to take care of the outdoor activities, yeah, you want to do it today. today and tomorrow the two driest days of the week. 67 livermore, 66 in fremont and 66 degrees today in beautiful san francisco where you will see that sun for the second half of the day. clouds increase as we head through tuesday night, wednesday morning. the rain arrives thursday. we'll get a little bit of a lull for the first part of the day. the second system arrives thursday into friday. a little bit of a break friday into saturday and then we get a weak system. the tail ending comes through impacting the north bay but enough moisture in the atmosphere and enough wind for downed indust eed trees so we'l over your changing weather. let's check your drive with mike. >> one of the few views we can clearly show you, this is fremont, 880, southbound side with the headlights starting to pick up the volume into

milpitas. starting to see a little slowing there. we'll show you the maps. as folks get down into the south bay, 880, 680, we do have the slowing north 101. that second burst and sticking and holding north 87 coming into downtown as far as that volume goes. those are the two trouble spots. we're looking at 28085 to follow closely over the next 20 minutes. a smoother drive heading north through palo alto where some of that fog on our sensors has started to move out of the area, but look at the live view and it does show you a real live picture. folks are traveling north and disappearing into the fog not too far away. basically willow is where folks disappear there. low visibility heading north past 84 and up towards 92. 92 in foster city, christina talked about very low visibility. this is westbound. these folks have come off of the bridge and traveling through foster city over towards san mateo for 92 where it's very thick for 101, 280 and highway 101 along the coast, definitely a difficult situation up toward pacifica. farther north we'll look at another live shot. the bay bridge, the metering

lights are on, the backup at the toll plaza going past the 880 overcrossing where you cannot see the cars coming off. lower those speeds especially getting into the city but no incidents. smooth drive once you get past those metering lights. emeryville, talking about dozens of feet for visibility. i pointed the camera almost directly down. these folks are traveling eastbound, counter commute, but we can barely see them. just a few dozen yards away from the camera. here that's your westbound commute. still moves smoothly out of richmond, but watch the north bay coming in toward the north shore freeway. very tough to see there as well. back to you. thank you very much. 6:21. up for grabs in the luck of the draw, how hundreds of millions of dollars could be yours in a matter of days just ahead. plus, who will be getting the starting job on sunday? what the 49ers are saying about their quarterback controversy just ahead. welcome back, everyone. 6:24. looks like the niners are still in the middle of a quarterback controversy. colin kaepernick helped the niners beat the saints last night 31-21. it was his second straight win as a starting quarterback. but after the game, coach jim harbaugh would not say if kaepernick or alex smith would start next sunday's game in st. louis. instead, he said his staff would look at the game tape and then decide. a lot of controversy about that.

well, san francisco known for its fog. the fog is all over the bay area, not just in san francisco today, but we are taking a look at the forecast. definitely need to make sure that you use your low beams when you head out the door today. >> that's right, because it can sneak up on you. we want to check the forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. >> can you hear me now? can you hear me now? there we go. >> loud and clear. >> thanks for stretching, though, that was very kind of both of you. good morning to you. we have less than a quarter of a mile of visibility in parts of the bay area from santa rosa to napa, you're going to find some thick pockets of fog. even san jose starting to drop off. this is very, very dangerous fog. if you don't know what you're getting into before you head out that front door, whenever we see 10 to 15-car pileups, it's due to reduced visibility and thick fog. take it easy out there. looks like everybody is heeding our advice so far, mike. relatively quiet in terms of the number of accidents out there. >> yeah, yeah, we don't want to

good morning to you. i'm marla tellez. jon kelley is off today. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. this morning your holiday shopping spree continues. yeah, if you survived black friday, gray thursday which sent shoppers nationwide scrambling into those big box scores to check off items off their holiday wish list. then came small business saturday when shoppers, including president obama, visited mom and pop stores nationwide. and today online retailers get their chance with deep discounts and special deals for cyber monday. business and tech reporter scott mcgrew joins us in the newsroom this morning. scott, is cyber monday the only shopping event where you're guaranteed not to get trampled, i suppose. >> reporter: i can't imagine why anyone goes to a store anymore. in fact we're seeing evidence of online shopping starting earlier this year. some of the same stores that you were showing open thursday, friday for shopping also posted their web deals early.

and the term cyber monday a bit old-fashioned, dates back to the early 2000s, when the only way anyone could get online was to do so from work. so the first day back from work after black friday became the biggest day of online shopping. these days you can buy something on your phone while waiting for a bus. that said, the concept did stick around because you've got great deals. amazon has this 55-inch panasonic on sale this morning. this i recommend all the time. this is $20 off. and then fisher-price on a number of sites, including target and amazon and toys r us are offering various deals. half off some of these toys in some cases. this was sort of a plane presence. san francisco-based virgin america will give you an entire airplane to take 136 friends to las vegas for the consumer electronics show in january. this includes tickets to the show. that's $49,000 if you're interested. and here's an interesting

statistic. clogger kara swisher points out people are using their ipad to shop. when it comes to tablets, they account for 80% of all online shopping. the most popular thing to buy is an ipad. bottom line, laura, we are using our ipads to buy more ipads. back to you. >> back to that virgin america thing, i think you can get that, take a whole bunch of us and probably write it off. >> reporter: you could. $49,000, they'll let you put your own decal on the outside. so it could be nbc bay area or whatever we want. they call it the nerd bird. all of the guys going from silicon valley out to las vegas. >> what happens in vegas, stays in vegas. all right, thanks a lot. meteorologist christina loren, time to get a look at that forecast and all that fog. >> yeah, we've got some really thick fog this morning. you know, a lot of people getting back to work today after a long holiday weekend, you want to make sure you're ready for this especially if you're taking the little ones to school. it is downright treacherous in

parts of the bay area. some of our cameras are so socked in with fog we can't even show them to you. let's take a look at your vichb visibilities right now. we have less than 50 feet in fairfield and san francisco. novato, san mateo, really thick pockets and flight delays out of sfo at an hour and 15 minutes. we don't have any flight delays out of san jose or oakland, but we are expecting that to take shape the next couple hours because the fog will be at its worst between 7:00 and 9:00. after that point we'll start to see some sunshine. the sun will break through the clouds and we'll see a nice finish to the day with temperatures approaching that 70-degree mark. not quite hitting it but getting very close to it. 66 bayside. at the coast we'll be at 65 degrees. we've got a lot of rain on the way, potentially up to three inches from three storm systems all approaching the coast as we speak. we'll time that out for you, what that means for your city coming up. first, let's check on that drive. people actually traveling cautiously so far this morning.

>> yeah, they're listening to your warning and my warning. so thanks for doing that. we're looking at the bay bridge where we wouldn't be able to see this well if it not for everybody to help us out lighting it up with their headlights. the backup back to basically west grand avenue. we'll show you what we're talking about as far as the fog. the area i've colored in with the orange is where it's dense enough and thick enough to be a drizzly situation. wet roadways will be an issue for the drivers as well. slow down the east show freeway from the top of your screen westbound 80 toward that windshield wiper icon. the richmond-san rafael bridge, a similar warning. the entire north bay socked in by a lot of fog. tough visibility there and definitely very thick patches coming down toward svallejo. 680 a little clearer heading toward the benicia bridge. san mateo bridge we'd like to watch it but we can't. we'll see west 92 across the

water slow for those taillights across the flat section, what we can see. over on the peninsula side we can see even less. i have to turn the camera very close. this is foster city, just a few dozen yards away from our city. you see how the bright lights are reflecting off the fog. that's why you do not use your high beams, use your standard beams. you can see the traffic flowing on west 92. back to you. the trial for a teenager accused of shooting a 3-month-old baby in east palo alto last year is set to begin this morning. prosecutors say the 18-year-old man fired on a mother and father as they were leaving a baby shower in june of last year. a bullet hit the couple's baby boy, isaac jimenez killing him. the mother was also hit as she tried to shield her other child, who was also in the back seat of the car. the man mistook the family for rival gang members. he's been charged with murder and attempted murder. a vallejo father is under arrest accused of shooting and killing a teenage boy who was

fighting with his son. witnesses tell police the victim and a 19-year-old had been in a physical fight before this shooting happened. when the 19-year-old called his father to pick him up, the father allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the 17-year-old dead. father and son took off but were arrested sunday at their home. 6:36. los altos police are showing just how much a pair of home burglars stole before being caught. investigators seized thousands of pieces of jewelry and electronics which were stuffed inside bags. two women were arrested last month after police spotted the pair casing a los altos neighborhood. much of the property has since been linked back to its owners. the suspects had allegedly burglarized nearly two dozen homes across the bay area as far back as june. the hospital that treated bryan stow for months after he was brutally beaten outside dodgers stadium last year wants the dodgers to pay up. san francisco general hospital is suing the dodgers for more than $1 million in reimbursement

for the brain trauma care provided to stow. the hospital lawsuit comes after stow's family filed their own suit against the team and its former owner in u.s. bankruptcy court. the case could set a new precedent for whether sports teams can be held accountable for third-party actions at their events. 6:37. coming up, a close call. a fiery explosion that sent a sheriff's deputy running for cover just ahead. ♪ we were skipping stones and letting go ♪

possibly some flights as well. this morning we've already seen plenty of crashes on bay area roads, including a crash on interstate 880 that sent one person to the hospital. we have a team in place with a look at the conditions you'll be facing this morning. mike inouye taking a look at your drive, meteorologist christina loren has a look at your forecast, but we begin with bob redell live at the bay bridge, just one of the many tricky spots out there this morning, bob. >> reporter: yeah, there's quite a few spots. good morning to you, laura. this fog will be shrouding your commute in the north bay, sf, upper peninsula and here in parts of the east bay, specifically oakland where we're at right now and there are dense fog advisories in effect for five of the bay area bridges. you've got the bay bridge behind me. that's number one. you can see at the toll plaza here it's certainly dense out here, thick fog. live look at the golden gate bridge camera. your headlights heading southbound into the city. you can see it's very thick there as well. the richmond-san rafael, the benicia-martinez and the san

mateo bridges, all five of those bridges have effects -- advisories in effect from the national weather service. now, according to our team of meteorologists, this could take some time to burn off because there's not much win. you've also got the late autumn sun that's at such a low angle it's not producing the kind of heat we need to burn this off so the fog could be lingering for much if not all of the morning commute. it's not clear if there will be delays at oakland international or sfo. it's too early to tell. fog did cause problems yesterday at sfo with delays up to an hour and a half. this was between 8:00 and 3:00 yesterday afternoon. >> we had this flight booked and it was cancelled -- not cancelled, but significantly delayed. and unfortunately we had a connecting flight. the only option we have now is to move to a flight tomorrow. >> reporter: won't know until 6:30 or 7:00 this morning, so between now and the next few

minutes whether or not sfo or oakland are going to have delays. this is according to conversation i had on the phone with them earlier this morning. if you're going to be out on the roads, slow down and use your low beams. your high beams do reflect back on you if you have a wall of fog in front of you and make sure your brake lights work so you don't hit anyone in front of you. make sure you don't tailgate. reporting live here, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. >> good advice. we want to check the forecast. it's going to take a while before the fog lifts, right? >> yeah, it is and now we're getting to the worst point because the sun is coming up and that does reduce the visibility even more. just like the high beams will make the fog appear a lot worse. this is what we're dealing with, like a big bowl of pea soup. live look at san bruin oh you can see above the thick, low clouds we've got a beautiful clear sky. this morning the winds are really not moving at all and the fog is settling in.

it's also creeping in from the delta, that tule fog association take it easy out there. a lot of people will be traveling today. you really want to take it easy. the fog will be in the central valley at least until 2:00 p.m. i'm expecting partial clearing by 11:00 a.m. here in the bay area and then completely clear conditions between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. look how thick the fog is this morning. you've got just about 50 feet of visibility in parts of fairfield and san mateo. you might walk out your door in san jose and it's completely clear. then you hit the highway and lose visibility just like that so make sure you're ready to step on the brakes and travel cautiously. we stop the clock on your futurecast at 9:00 a.m. and that's when the fog is going to start to lift. the beautiful clear sky will make an appearance over the greater bay area. tomorrow morning still a fair amount of cloud cover. we stop the clock at 6:00 a.m. and getting a little drizzle between 6:00 and 8:00, but the main event for the week when it comes to your weather forecast

arrives early wednesday morning. we have a lot of rain, three storm systems to get through. a series of storms. the first comes through wednesday morning just in time for your drive and we're talking about very slick conditions. we stop the clock at 5:00 p.m. as you start the commute home from work on wednesday we'll get a little bit of a break. then i stop the clock again at 2:00 a.m. thursday as our second storm system starts to move onshore. so you'll have two dry days with temperatures in the 60s before that rain arrives. 67 in livermore, 66 in fremont and 66 in san francisco. although we're not getting much of a break for your morning commute with that thick fog out there, this system, the first one, is going to be packing very gusty winds as well so we are anticipating downed trees as grounds are already saturated from recent rains and more on the way. saturday into sunday, i'd love to be able to tell you we'll get a break for the weekend but it doesn't look that way. if you are going to make outdoor plans, late saturday into early

sunday you'll have one opportunity and the second half of sunday you should get outdoors before dodging those showers. let's check your drive. it's a rough one. >> allow extra time to slow those speeds because spots like sunol illustrate what we're talking about. south 680 coming around the bend, pretty clear once you're out of pleasanton but then you make your way up the hill into fremont and get caught with low clouds. pockets of fog continuing. as christina said, the sun comes up, heating things up, stirring up more fog. in fremont it's still very clear as far as the visibility but we see the mist starting to become more visible. southbound picking up the volume but speeds still close to 60 traveling south through union city and into the south bay. the maps will show you 680 and 880 both coming down into san jose are okay. we have a little slowing coming around the bend into west 237. there's an accident involving maybe five cars over there. they're all reported off of the roadway and no injuries, but a distraction for sure. that's as more folks are coming through the area, north 101.

north 87, look at that, 280 just starting to show slowing right around the 880 interchange. 85, at the bottom of your screen slow from 87 really packing it in as you approach 17 and continuing up towards saratoga. there's your south bay commute. although the fog is kind of drifting out of the south bay and along the peninsula, we have palo alto which shows you in some spots we have that low visibility. low clouds hovering around 101. a little tough at the san mateo bridge on the hayward side and the bay bridge still has fog sticking around with the backup as well, guys. we'll sending it back to you. 6:50 now. a san jose man wanted for murder was nabbed during a black friday shopping trip. he is expected in court this week. he was spotted at a walmart by an off duty probation officer. the officer called morgan hill police who surrounded the building and arrested him without any trouble. he's wanted for murder and attempted murder in san jose. a san francisco deputy accused of robbing a bank is

expected to enter a plea today. police say these surveillance pictures and fingerprints led them to deputy philip tong. he's accused of robbing a bank on balboa street on november 7th. he allegedly handed the teller a note demanding money and teller handed over $1700 in cash. the seven-year veteran is now on unpaid leave. he recently filed for bankruptcy. a change in leadership in a city already facing instability and a spike in violent crime. san jose's police chief is about to retire as the city struggles with a homicide rate that's well above last year's total. damian trujillo is live in san jose where today the department will ask the public for help in the search for a successor. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. that meeting gets under way at 6:30 tonight here at the berryessa community center. no one is denying that finding a new police chief will not be easy. he or she will have to deal with low morale and a dndling

budget. chief chris moore announced that he would retire at the end of january of this coming year. he leaves a department that is nowhere near the staffing levels he feels are needed to keep the city and his officers safe. the new chief will have to come in and play a political card game basically, working with the city manager and the mayor on the police budget. but he or she will also have to assure the rank and file that he or she has their backs. no names -- two names actually that have surfaced as possible candidates are jerry dyer, the chief in fresno. he retired last year, only to be lured back to the job by city leaders. another is a sacramento police chief, rick braziel. he retires at the end of this year and also had to layoff 150 officers. tonight's meeting at the berryessa community center will last about an hour and a half. that's followed by a meeting on wednesday night at the camden community center and it ends on december 10th at the southside

community center in san jose. again, a tough decision for city leaders, who will be the next police chief. community input begins tonight at 6:30. we're live at the berryessa community center. i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." a couple who flew out of novato in a small plane and crashed in southern california is in fair condition today. the husband was flying to the john wayne airport in orange county when the plane lost power over the san fernando valley. the plane tore through a fence, flipped over and then came to a stop on a sidewalk near a cal state north ridge soccer field. two roommates on their way to church stopped to help. >> we get the girl. she's asking about her husband. i've got to get my husband. we go get him, he's like i'm fine, i'm fine, but he has blood all down his face. i have his blood on my hands. >> the couple was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. the cause of that crash is under investigation. a california couple is dead and their 16-year-old son missing after they tried to

rescue their dog from heavy surf on the northern california coast. officials say the boy jumped in the water after the dog was swept away by 8 to 10-foot waves in trinidad north of eureka. his father went in after them. when the boy returned without his father, he and his mother went back into the water. they were both dragged into the ocean. >> arrived on scene and had trouble accessing the area. because the sand is real soft up here. they got up to the area of the incident and recovered one person fairly fast. the second person was washed ashore and recovered. >> very sad. the coast guard still searching for the 16-year-old son. the dog is safe. the world is together together to help fight climate change. representatives from nearly 200 countries are attending a climate summit in the mideast nation of qatar.

talks will include extending the protocol which is a u.n. plan to reduce emissions. several nations, including the u.s., have not signed on with that treaty. well, you may have noticed something new on your facebook feed this morning. >> all of a sudden some of your friends are posting legal notices. scott mcgrew, quite the fad. >> reporter: it is a fad. it's a fad that will probably die out as quickly as it started. thousands of people are cutting and pasting legal notices in their facebook status declaring a copyright on their pictures and other things they post to facebook, saying facebook can't copy them or disseminate them. now, while the notification sounds official, it doesn't work for two reasons. first, when you sign up for facebook, you agree to certain terms of service. you don't get to change those all on your own. second, facebook copies and distributes your photographs and whatnot because that's how facebook works. if you don't want your photographs distributed to your friends, you probably shouldn't

upload them to facebook. as for the markets, facebook is up about 4% this morning as we're watching the dow industrials down about 60 points after a pretty good rally on their half day on friday. we're going to sift through the rest of the year. some selling for tax purpose bus i think we'll sit quiet as we wait to see what happens on the fiscal cliff. happening now, protesters are filling the streets of cairo and camping out in tahrir square today as political unrest grows and we are giving you a live look at the scene right now in cairo. the protests are in response to president muhammed morsi's massive expansion of his powers. among his new powers, immunity from the nation's courts. morsi said the new powers are needed to hurry up the transition process from decades of rule by former dictator hawes kn -- hosni mubarak.

6:57. we've been talking about the fog all morning long. we want to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> now we're getting to the worst point when it comes to that fog formation between 7:00 and 9:00. after 9:00 it should start to burn off and we are expecting quite a beautiful finish to the day. this is a live look at the sunol grade and you can see that fog has settled in but we've got a beautiful clear sky above. it's just going to take a little time for the sun to break through those clouds. right now the thickest pockets are up and down the peninsula so travel cautiously. this morning your hour-by-hour detail works like this. at noon we'll be in the mid-60s just about everywhere with the clouds still in place. we'll see partly cloudy conditions at noon. by 4:00 p.m. completely clear, really good-looking day on tap. 67 degrees inland, 66 bayside and 65 at the coast. one more dry day for tuesday and then heavy rain on the way. we'll be tracking those storm systems all week long. let's check on your drive at 6:58. how are we doing, mike? >> we are having a backup at the bay bridge toll plaza as you might expect. there are the lights, you can see them backed up back past

west grand avenue but the thick fog, chp has extended their fog advisory for drivers over this span and the golden gate bridge, richmo richmond-san rafael and san mateo bridges as well. farther south the fog drifting around the area but it's mostly hovering right above the roadway for 101 but thicker patches north of san mateo and into san francisco along the coast. the map shows you the south bay with some slowing northbound continuing to build here, 101 actually right around capital. 87 coming into downtown, 85 with that build still up to saratoga as well as that 280 interchange. the tri-valley not really seeing a lot of fog but we see a lot of traffic for 580 and south 680 into that area where christina showed you those clouds. 6:59. one final check of the day's top stories. back to work for congress as it tries to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. republicans and democrats have signed and signalled they may be ready to compromise on a hot button issue like tax increases. if a budget deal is not reached
